Large 19th Century Chinese Imari Baluster Vase.
Very rare decoration showing Laozi in metaphorical scene of bringing the divine knowledge from the sky to the people living below. Decorations are symmetrical: the scene with Laozi is painted on both sides of the vase and the decorations between and surrounding those two medallions are also creating a mirroring impression but in fact they are a little bit different: they are composed with blooming trees, birds and ornamental mist, all painted by a very skilled artist with a keen eye for detail. The colours are very vivid, red, coral, cobalt blue are deep and intense. Underglaze colouring with gold gilding. Traditionally the neck and the foot are decorated with ornamental patterned collars.
