Decorated with inlaid mother-of-pearl floral foliage and swirls typical for European style of decorations as well as strictly Chinese additions.

The main motif of the Sacred Heart of Christ is strictly related to the Jesuits who  arrived to Macau with the Portuguese traders in the mid 16th C.

Jesuit theological doctrine is set on the cult and adoration of Christ it emphasises the role of the sin and human mortality which might be also reminded here on this item with the use of the skull and crossbones as a depiction of memento mori - symbol very popular in 17th and 18th C.

Very interesting and intriguing item combining multiple cultural and historical links and knots worth studying and researching!

Condition: very good, with just minor scratches on the edges and unfortunate small inscription on the back.
